A number of studies show that carpet that has been cleaned often can become the habitat of dust mites. This can cause severe allergies and other breathing problems. Not only that, it can cause damage to the fibers of the carpet by depositing the chemical preservatives and stabilizers that make them last so long.
However, there are many ways to keep carpets fresh and clean. Most of them are very cheap and easy to do. Most people wouldn’t think of doing them in the home, but they really should, especially when there is dust coming from around the house.
First, vacuum the carpet at least once a week. Use an upright vacuum cleaner that has a brush attachment to remove any loose dirt that is lying around. If there is pet hair, it must be removed. Allowing the carpet to soak up excess water means that it will absorb the moisture.
Next, use a damp mop or floor scrubber on tile floors. Wipe out any loose dirt and use a dry mop with disinfectant spray. Use this regularly. Never use scouring wax or abrasive scrubbers on tile floors.
Finally, store room. For one thing, carpet is a perfect insulator. In fact, it is one of the best insulators in the world. However, when it’s sitting in a basement, it’s not so hot and comfortable. Instead of just tossing the carpet in the attic, take advantage of it by putting it in a garage or store room and work it around to cover any crevices that aren’t used anymore.
Finally, be sure to turn the lights off and unplug all electronics in the room. Close the curtains, if you have them. Put the TV off to the side or in another room. Keep the living room off the television and the rest of the room off any gaming systems.
Carpeting is one of the most difficult areas of a home to clean. By having a professional rug cleaning company come in periodically to help, you can make sure that your rug lasts as long as it should.
